Archbishop Wood Wrestling
With many of our wrestlers returning from a solid performance during the previous 2014-15 season (graduated only 1 senior from last year's line-up), the team worked hard during the off-season (March thru November), working out at Coach Meister's gym at least 3-days every week, competing year-round and attending our team wrestling camps at Wood and at Kutztown University.

On December 19th, Wood hosted the 4th Annual Kurt Meister Invitational Wrestling Tournament and the team took 1st place.  With a dual match record this year (2015-16) of 10-7 overall and 3-0 in the PCL Blue division.  Wood was the #1 seeded team entering the PCL dual team playoffs where they wrestled LaSalle in the semi-finals.  Wood won (37-33), beating LaSalle for the 1st time since 2004, putting them into the Championship match for the 1st time in 12 years against Father Judge.  Wood ultimately lost to Father Judge (25-32) in a very close match, in front of a packed gym.  This past weekend the team won the PCL Sectional Championship for the first time ever, and it was the first time Wood won the PCL League Championship since 1989.  The team qualified 10 out of the 12 wrestlers to the District Championships this coming weekend.  The team is hopeful to qualify all 10 wrestlers onto the Regional Championships, which is the gateway to entering the State Championships.

In addition to the success on the mat, the wrestling team has 7 varsity wrestlers eligible for Academic All-State Honors: Alex Shaffer (0.784), Max Shaffer (0.718), Harry Green (.722), Brett Yoos (0.629), Steve Veneziale (0.600), Austin Gillick (0.686) and Matt Murray (.615).

Wood Wrestling will be having their annual Beef n Beer on April 2, 2016. Mr. Peter's will be presented with a commemorative ring that the Wood Wrestling Alumni got him to honor his service to the school and wrestling team.

The Steve Peters Tribute Luncheon
Jul 7, 2015, 5:55 pm

Please join us in a celebration of Steve Peters and his longtime service as an educator both on and off the wrestling mat.

Coach Peters started the Archbishop Wood Wrestling program in 1972 and has since been at the helm 2 other times,  most recently to save the program from collapse at the begining of the 2011-12 season.  Over the years, Steve has given tirelessly of himself, whether in the classroom, the wrestling room or football field and in the cafeteria selling donuts so the wrestlers enjoy a meal every once in a while.  So please come out and enjoy some laughs and some stories.

Checks or paypal payments should be made out to Joe McCann.  See Flyer for info.

Every year Connie McDermott runs a Super Bowl block pool, it’s a lot of fun and all proceeds go to the wrestling team.  Below email is from Connie, please send your pool to  cmcd1223@yahoo.com.  email Connie for an updated pool.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday and New Year. We are now in full swing of the 2014-15 wrestling season. Over the years we have run a football pool around the NFL Super Bowl and have used this as the teams fundraiser. This has been a fun way to raise some money for the team and add some fun with the potential to win some money back. This is a block pool that corresponds to the score of the football game. There are 100 blocks, 10 rows of 10 and we will number these blocks from 1-100. After all the blocks are filled in, numbers from 0-9 will be picked and filled in along the top of the rows to correspond with the AFC team, then again down along the columns to correspond with the NFC team. The set of numbers that intersect with your numbered block will be your numbers, if they match the last digit of the score you win.(i.e.. NFC 17, AFC 10, the block with NFC 7 & AFC 0 wins)

We will be selling the blocks for $20 each, this will give us a total of $2000.00, half will go to the team the other half will be distributed to the winning blocks as follows,

$200 goes to the winner of the first quarter

$200 goes to the winner of the second quarter

$200 goes to the winner of the third quarter

$400 goes to the winner of the final.

Thanks for your support & GOOD LUCK!!

Kurt Meister Invitational Tournament - Dec. 20th, 2014
Dec 2, 2014, 8:36 pm

On Dec. 20th, 2014 the Wood Wrestling team will be hosting The Kurt Meister Invitational Tournament.  Kurt Meister was a proud supporter of the Archbishop Wood Wrestling Team, a parent of 2 Wood Wrestlers (now coaches).  He generosity volunteered to do whatever was needed to help out the program including building two different wrestling rooms.  Kurt Meister passed away in Feb. 2012.  Only days before, he was in the stands cheering Wood Wrestlers on at the PCL Individual Tournament.  Please come out a cheer on the Vikings as we host our 1st individual tournament in over 7 year.  We know Kurt will be.
