Westtown Duals Recap

The Wood Wrestling team completed is regular season over the weekend by going 2-3 @ the Westtown School Duals. 
The team was very competitive despite missing some it regular starters due to injury.
The biggest match of the day was against league rival St. Joe’s Prep.
The Vikings lost to the Hawks 36-31 after spotting the Prep 12 points due to forfeits.

Freshman 160lber Chad Sheehan continued racking up the wins going 5-0 with 4 wins by fall. Currently his record is 21-3.
Also performing well this weekend were seniors Mike McGee & Kevin Bongarzone, both going 4-1.
Sophomore Paul Hoelsworth joined them with a 4-1 record.
Freshman Austin Gillick went 3-1 on the day as well. Stepping up big for injured starters were Freshman Brett Yoos going 2-2 @ 126
and Joel Corpening 3-2 despite jumping up two weight classes to compete at 152. 

The Wrestlers will begin the road to States on Feb. 15th @ the PCL Individual Championships. Wrestling begins at 9am at Archbishop Ryan HS.

Wood Bonner Recap

Wood Wrestling Announcement 1/16/14 


The Wrestling team remained undefeated last night, winning 13 out of 14 matches on the way to a 73-5 victory against Msgr. Bonner.

The team is now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the PCL Blue Division.  With the win last night, the Vikings are in line to host LaSalle in the 1st round of the playoffs on Monday 1/27.   


Derek McDermott and Jake Cooper both pinned their opponents in under 1 min. Paul Hoelsworth stuck his guy in the last second of the 1st period. 

Kevin Bongarzone won with an impressive feet to back Lateral Drop for the Pin, while Vince DiRienzo and Mike McGee easily handled their competition on the way to Tech. Falls,

which is a win by 15 or more points, similar to a mercy rule in other sports. 

So. Matt Murray continues to grind out tough wins,  winning 4-2 with a takedown in the last 10 seconds of regulation.  


The Wrestlers will host Conwell Egan next Wednesday Jan 22nd for Senior Night.  Please come out and support the team and buy a doughnut while you’re at it.

We will be dedicating the wrestling complex to the memory of former parent, supporter, and booster,  Jack Donohue.  Please come and share in this well deserved honor.

Dinner and Drinks, 50/50, Silent Auctions, Raffles.... Some old highlight reels and other matches from back in the day.

WOOD 40 - McDevitt 24

The Archbishop Wood Wrestling team continued on with their winning ways by beating Bishop McDevitt 40-24 on the road. The Vikings are 2-0 in the division with sole possession of 1st place and remain undefeated overall at a perfect 6-0. The win also brings Head Coach Vic Stanley's career wins to 491.


After falling behind 12-0, Wood 145lber Sr. Mike McGee (7-2 record) won a hard fought Major decision 11-2. At 152lb, Derek McDermott, pinned his opponent with a double arm bar in the 2nd period. These wins jump started the Vikings who would go onto win the next 5 bouts including Vince DiRienzo's 4-2 decision @ 170 and Soph. Matt Murray's nail biter 9-7 decision in 195lb weight class.


Jr Chad Haegele capped off the night with his 5th Under a minute pin of the year. This brings Chad's total to a team leading 13-1 record with 10 pins in all.
Also collecting wins for Wood were Sr. Kevin Bongarzone, Jr. Jake Cooper, and Fr. Chad Sheehan.


The Varsity will be traveling out to central PA to take on a bunch of District 3 teams in the Warrior Invitational Tournament this weekend at Susquehannock High School, while the JV will be heading to Germantown Academy. Be sure to come out next Wednesday night, Jan. 15th, as the wrestling team will be under the spotlight and tries to remain undefeated for the year in it's PCL match against Msgr. Bonner. Wrestling gets underway @ 6pm.

New Mat Fund - Update

UPDATE: As of 1/5/14 -  Well the new mat is finally in, has been cured and is ready for the season - however we still need help in paying it off!  We're doing well but we're not there yet.  We just got some great conributions from the Corpening & Gillick Family's and also Alumni Joe Wagner and current wrestler Chad Haegele.
We are just over 40% of the way there with $3410 raised to date. Leaving only $4590 - $5 = 1sqft ...  - Every little bit helps.
Attention wrestlers past and present, parents and friends of wrestlers past and present, friends of friends or anyone else who wants to help - WE NEED A NEW WRESTLING MAT. The cost is $8000. The mat will be 40 x 40 that is 1600 square feet You can buy one square foot for $5.00. We get 1600 donations of $5.00 and the mat is paid for.

1st Annual Meister Duals Recap

The Archbishop Wood Wrestling team had a very good weekend by winning all 4 of their matches at the 1st Annual Meister Duals, which pitted 3 Philadelphia Catholic League teams against 3 Philadelphia Public League teams. The Meister Duals were named in honor of Kurt Meister former Wood Wrestling parent & booster who help construct the wrestling room and the north gym renovations.

Wood 60 - Lincoln 6
Wood 50 - Franklin Towne Charter 24
Wood 33 - George Washington 27
Wood 57 - Archbishop Ryan 24
Sr. Mike McGee went 4-0 with 3 pins @ 145lbs. 
Jr. Chad Haegele remained undefeated for the season going 4-0 bring his season total to 7-0.
So. Alex Bellini 4-0 with 3 pins and 1 tech fall.
Fr. 160lb Chad Sheehan 4-0 with 3 1st period pins.
So. John Fasti went 3-0 with 2 pins and got the team a much needed win in a crucial match. after bumping up to the 126lb weight class. John scored a takedown to win 4-2 in Sudden Victory Overtime against George Washington,  a team that had beaten Wood the past 2 seasons. 
So. 132 George Frattara went 3-0 on the day.
Congrates also go to Fr. Brett Yoos for going 2-0 and earning his 1st Varsity wins. Also wrestling well for the Vikings were Seniors Derek McDerott 3-1 @ 152lbs, Vince DiRienzo 3-1 @ 170 & Kevin Bongarzone 3-1 @ 182lbs & So. 106lber Paul Hoelsworth 3-1.  
As a team, Wood won 22 of their 36 contested matches by fall, earning 7 more Under a Minute Pins.  Wood also won 31 of 36 individual bouts.  
In addition, The Wrestling team helped to raise $712.29 for the Face Off Against Cancer, a charity that helps local families that are fighting cancer cover some of their medical expenses.  This charity was started for former Viking wrestler Phil Spinosa ('97) 
Next up will be the 46th Annual Christmas City Tournament held at Bethlehem Catholic on Dec. 27th & 28th.  The next home match will open the PCL Season for Wood on Sat. Jan. 4th at 1pm against Cardinal O'Hara. 

Schedule Update

The Archbishop Carroll match has been rescheduled for Thursday Jan.23rd @ Archbishop Carroll. Varsity will kick things of at 6PM sharp and JV to follow. 


Wood will now be competing at the Goast Town Duals @ Abington HS on Jan. 25th, 2014.  Teams competing in the event include: D1 teams Abington, Pennsbury, Upper Moreland, Hatboro-Horsham, Lower Moreland, Wissahickon and Central HS from D12.

The Wood Wrestling team took 3rd (of 17) falling 1 point short of 2nd place C.B.West. @ this past weekends New Hope-Solebury Wrestling Tournament.  Two years ago the Viking wrestlers only won 1 match and placed dead last.  Last year, the team took 6th place.  A great offseason of lifting and competing are paying off.
Jr. Chad Haegele, went 3-0 and won the 120lb weight class. He recorded three 1st period pins on his way to repeating as champion. He also earned the Outstanding Wrestlers Award for the 2nd consecutive year.  
Fr. 160lb Chad Sheehan, went 5-1 on his way to 3rd place.  
Seniors Vince DiReinzo & JP Rosney and So. Matt Murray took 4th.
Jr. Matt McWilliams and Sr. Derek McDermott both went 3-2
In JV action 
Jr. Joel Corpening and Fr. Dan Boruta went 2-0. 
Pinning in Under a Minute for the Vikings were
Chad Haegele twice, Matt McWilliams, Chad Sheehan, and JP Rosney.
