9/11 Heroes Run

Archbishop Wood Wrestlers, Alumni, Parents and Fans.  We would like a good group of people to run in the 9/11 Heroes Run to benefit the Travis Manion Foundation. The Jack Donohue Wrestling Complex

It's been a long time coming but the wrestling facility at Archbishop Wood has been redeadicated The Jack Donohue Memorial Wrestling Complex.  Jack Donohue was a wrestling parent, lifelong booster and supporter, in addition to be scorekeeper for many season.  Whenever Wood Wrestling would be in need of equipment, uniforms or some other equipment, you could be sure the Jack Donohue was leading the charge to aquire it.

Wood qualified 5 wrestlers to the NE Regional

Jr. Chad Haegele repeated as District 12 Champion @ 113lbs

Fr. Chad Sheehan was the runner up at 160lbs

So. John Fasti was 4th @ 120lb

So. Matt Murray was 5th @ 195lb and Sr. Derek McDermott was 5th @ 152lb but was injured and will not be able to continue on.

PCL/Section 8 Individual Tournament

Archbishop Wood placed 3rd in the Philadelphia Catholic League Individual tournament today at Archbishop Ryan, which is the highest finish for Wood since the mid 2000's.
 
The Archbishop Wood Vikings had 2 Champions @ 113 Jr. Chad Haegele & @ 160 Fr. Chad Sheehan.  Chad Haegele (25-1) won by fall and had two decisions on the way to winning the 113lb title, become the 1st First team All-Catholic Wrestler for Wood since 2009.    Less then 1 hr later, Freshman Chad Sheehan (24-3), joined him as a 1st team All Catholic.   Sheehan  won the 160lb weight class with a decision and 2 pins in under a min including a 0:49 sec pin in the finals over Roman Catholic's Gerry Gaydosh.

Sr. Vince DiRienzo earned 2nd team All Catholic @ 170lbs.

3rd Team honors went to So. 120lber John Fasti, 152lbs Sr. Derek McDermott, and 195lbs So. Matt Murray.
 

Wood will advance 9 wrestlers to District 12 Championship this Saturday @ LaSalle HS. Top 5 will advance to the NE region in two weeks.

 

Congrates to all our Wrestlers for a great season and hopefully it'll last another 3 weeks.  Keep up the hard work. 


Westtown Duals Recap

The Wood Wrestling team completed is regular season over the weekend by going 2-3 @ the Westtown School Duals. 
The team was very competitive despite missing some it regular starters due to injury.
The biggest match of the day was against league rival St. Joe’s Prep.
The Vikings lost to the Hawks 36-31 after spotting the Prep 12 points due to forfeits.


Freshman 160lber Chad Sheehan continued racking up the wins going 5-0 with 4 wins by fall. Currently his record is 21-3.
Also performing well this weekend were seniors Mike McGee & Kevin Bongarzone, both going 4-1.
Sophomore Paul Hoelsworth joined them with a 4-1 record.
Freshman Austin Gillick went 3-1 on the day as well. Stepping up big for injured starters were Freshman Brett Yoos going 2-2 @ 126
and Joel Corpening 3-2 despite jumping up two weight classes to compete at 152. 


The Wrestlers will begin the road to States on Feb. 15th @ the PCL Individual Championships. Wrestling begins at 9am at Archbishop Ryan HS.

Wood Bonner Recap

Wood Wrestling Announcement 1/16/14 

 

The Wrestling team remained undefeated last night, winning 13 out of 14 matches on the way to a 73-5 victory against Msgr. Bonner.

The team is now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the PCL Blue Division.  With the win last night, the Vikings are in line to host LaSalle in the 1st round of the playoffs on Monday 1/27.   

 

Derek McDermott and Jake Cooper both pinned their opponents in under 1 min. Paul Hoelsworth stuck his guy in the last second of the 1st period. 

Kevin Bongarzone won with an impressive feet to back Lateral Drop for the Pin, while Vince DiRienzo and Mike McGee easily handled their competition on the way to Tech. Falls,

which is a win by 15 or more points, similar to a mercy rule in other sports. 

So. Matt Murray continues to grind out tough wins,  winning 4-2 with a takedown in the last 10 seconds of regulation.  

 

The Wrestlers will host Conwell Egan next Wednesday Jan 22nd for Senior Night.  Please come out and support the team and buy a doughnut while you’re at it.

The 3rd Annual Wood Wrestling Beef and Beer is scheduled for

Adults $40.00 Kids (under 21) $20.00.

 

We will be dedicating the wrestling complex to the memory of former parent, supporter, and booster,  Jack Donohue.  Please come and share in this well deserved honor.


Dinner and Drinks, 50/50, Silent Auctions, Raffles.... Some old highlight reels and other matches from back in the day.
