New Mat Fund - Update

UPDATE: As of 1/5/14 -  Well the new mat is finally in, has been cured and is ready for the season - however we still need help in paying it off!  We're doing well but we're not there yet.  We just got some great conributions from the Corpening & Gillick Family's and also Alumni Joe Wagner and current wrestler Chad Haegele.
 
We are just over 40% of the way there with $3410 raised to date. Leaving only $4590 - $5 = 1sqft ...  - Every little bit helps.
Attention wrestlers past and present, parents and friends of wrestlers past and present, friends of friends or anyone else who wants to help - WE NEED A NEW WRESTLING MAT. The cost is $8000. The mat will be 40 x 40 that is 1600 square feet You can buy one square foot for $5.00. We get 1600 donations of $5.00 and the mat is paid for.

1st Annual Meister Duals Recap

The Archbishop Wood Wrestling team had a very good weekend by winning all 4 of their matches at the 1st Annual Meister Duals, which pitted 3 Philadelphia Catholic League teams against 3 Philadelphia Public League teams. The Meister Duals were named in honor of Kurt Meister former Wood Wrestling parent & booster who help construct the wrestling room and the north gym renovations.

Sr. Mike McGee went 4-0 with 3 pins @ 145lbs. 
Jr. Chad Haegele remained undefeated for the season going 4-0 bring his season total to 7-0.
So. Alex Bellini 4-0 with 3 pins and 1 tech fall.
Fr. 160lb Chad Sheehan 4-0 with 3 1st period pins.
So. John Fasti went 3-0 with 2 pins and got the team a much needed win in a crucial match. after bumping up to the 126lb weight class. John scored a takedown to win 4-2 in Sudden Victory Overtime against George Washington,  a team that had beaten Wood the past 2 seasons. 
So. 132 George Frattara went 3-0 on the day.
Congrates also go to Fr. Brett Yoos for going 2-0 and earning his 1st Varsity wins. Also wrestling well for the Vikings were Seniors Derek McDerott 3-1 @ 152lbs, Vince DiRienzo 3-1 @ 170 & Kevin Bongarzone 3-1 @ 182lbs & So. 106lber Paul Hoelsworth 3-1.  
 
As a team, Wood won 22 of their 36 contested matches by fall, earning 7 more Under a Minute Pins.  Wood also won 31 of 36 individual bouts.  
 
In addition, The Wrestling team helped to raise $712.29 for the Face Off Against Cancer, a charity that helps local families that are fighting cancer cover some of their medical expenses.  This charity was started for former Viking wrestler Phil Spinosa ('97) 
 
Next up will be the 46th Annual Christmas City Tournament held at Bethlehem Catholic on Dec. 27th & 28th.  The next home match will open the PCL Season for Wood on Sat. Jan. 4th at 1pm against Cardinal O'Hara. 
 

Schedule Update

The Archbishop Carroll match has been rescheduled for Thursday Jan.23rd @ Archbishop Carroll. Varsity will kick things of at 6PM sharp and JV to follow. 

 

Wood will now be competing at the Goast Town Duals @ Abington HS on Jan. 25th, 2014.  Teams competing in the event include: D1 teams Abington, Pennsbury, Upper Moreland, Hatboro-Horsham, Lower Moreland, Wissahickon and Central HS from D12.

 


NEW HOPE-SOLBURY TOURNAMENT RECAP

The Wood Wrestling team took 3rd (of 17) falling 1 point short of 2nd place C.B.West. @ this past weekends New Hope-Solebury Wrestling Tournament.  Two years ago the Viking wrestlers only won 1 match and placed dead last.  Last year, the team took 6th place.  A great offseason of lifting and competing are paying off.
 
Jr. Chad Haegele, went 3-0 and won the 120lb weight class. He recorded three 1st period pins on his way to repeating as champion. He also earned the Outstanding Wrestlers Award for the 2nd consecutive year.  
Fr. 160lb Chad Sheehan, went 5-1 on his way to 3rd place.  
Seniors Vince DiReinzo & JP Rosney and So. Matt Murray took 4th.
 
Jr. Matt McWilliams and Sr. Derek McDermott both went 3-2
 
In JV action 
Jr. Joel Corpening and Fr. Dan Boruta went 2-0. 
 
Pinning in Under a Minute for the Vikings were
Chad Haegele twice, Matt McWilliams, Chad Sheehan, and JP Rosney.

Welcome Back

Now that school is back in session, here's a couple updates about what has been going on.

 

On Saturday, Sept. 14th - We had our 2nd annual Wood Wrestling Golf Outing at Northampton Valley Country Club.  Great weather, Great atmosphere, and some great golfing.  Many thanks to our Volunteers, Sponsors and Guest, without you we would not nearly be close to where we want be. The following day Sunday Sept. 15th. Wood Wrestling ran in the 5K Heroes Run to support The Travis Manion Foundation. "The Foundation’s Mission is to assist our nation’s veterans and the families of Fallen Heroes. We will continue the service to community and country exemplified by these Fallen Heroes and veterans. In the spirit of the Fallen, we will foster strength of mind and body to create a generation of future leaders." Pictures to come soon.

Currently, we are having offseason workouts. Tues/Wed/Thurs.

TUE and WED 2:45-3:45: We are carpooling over to Elite Technique Crossfit. 

THURSDAYS 2:45-4PM:  We are meeting at school to get a workout in. 

W've been getting great numbers so far. The Guys are lifting hard and getting pumped for the season.  Come out and join your teamates if you haven't been. 

SAYURDAY OCT 12th: Our team will be running in the Remember 5K Walk/Run to honor the Memory of Mr. Rich Kelly, for Gym teacher and longtime wrestling team supporter.  Afterwards will be AW Homecoming VikingFest with Food, Draft Beer, Beer Tasting, Live Music, DJ, kids games, alumni games, craft tables, and much more.  Proceeds from both events go towards the Rich Kelly Fund which helps offset cost of our teams in the postseason.

FRIDAY Oct 25th We will be getting our weight certifications done after school. Please come hydrated.  WE will discuse more after the workouts. 

 

SUNDAY OCT 27th @ 1PM - We will have MANDATORY:  IMPACT CONCUSSION BASELINE TESTING for anyone who has yet to get this done. 

 

 


2013 Golf Outing

Please come and join us for our 2nd Annual Archbishop Wood Wrestling Golf Outing. 

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 14th, 2013

REGISTRATION: 12:30pm      SHOTGUN START: 130pm

WHERE: Northampton Valley Country Club - Richboro, PA

WHAT: 4 Member team Scramble Style outing to help raise money for the Archbishop Wood HS Wrestling team for travel, tournament fees, facility improvements and other team needs.  There will be a silent auction, raffles, 50/50 during and after dinner.

COST:  $125 per player  which includes Green Fee and cart, dinner and on-course refreshments  This year courtesy Faulkner Buick, every golfer will be receiving a $200 Maui Jim gift car from them. You will need to stop by the dealership and take a quick test drive to activate the card.

 

CONTESTS: Closest to the pin, Longest Drive, Hole in One, (Wins a car courtesy of Faulker Car Dealership, Pat Duffy ‘91)

We are shooting at closing the course this year but we will need 120 golfers /30 foursome in order to do so.  We will have more beer stations set up over the course. 
Alumni & Friends: We'd love seeing you and updating you all in person on the progress of the program.  We are looking for as many alumni foursomes as possible so please start gathering your teams. 
Wrestlers and parents:  We are looking for each wrestler to try and get one foursome signed and also as many hole sponsorships as possible.  And we will also need some volunteers. please check your emails with more info on this.

Congratulations to Chad Haegele, 113lb District 12 Champion. He is Wood's 2nd District Champion in as many years!! Congratulations to John Fasti Jr., 4th place finisher in District 12 @ 106lbs. Both guys advance to the NE Regional next weekend @ Bethlehem Liberty High School. Well done guys.!! Also Placing for Wood @ Districts were, Fr. George Frattara 120lbs 6th place, Sr. Kevin Kinkade 138lbs 6th place, and Jr. JP Rosney 220lb 6th place!

Timeline
8:00 – 8:15 Team Arrival
8:15 – Scales open for weight check

Arrival
- Teams should plan to arrive at Edison between 8:00am and 8:-15am. Buse should enter from the rear of the school located on Hunting Park Ave. west of Front St. (entrance is by the football field). Buses will drop off and pick-up at the driveway entrance located between the school and football field. Entrance to the school will be through the rear entrances which lead directly to the gymnasium.
- Weigh-ins/skin checks will be conducted in Room 247 located just outside the gymnasium. Scales will be available to check weight beginning at 8:15. Weigh-ins will commence at 8:45.
- All spectators will enter through the rear of the school. Parking is located on the south side of the building along the rear driveway entrance. No one is to park in the driveway running between the school and the football field.
- Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for students/children. All persons entering will go through a security check.
Directions
School address is 151 W. Luzerne St. Phila. Pa. 19140. All entrance will be from the rear of the school off of Hunting Park Ave.
- From Rt 1(Roosevelt Blvd,) North, make a right onto Rising Sun Ave. Follow Rising Sun about 1 mile to Hunting Park Ave. Make a left on Hunting Park and the entrance to the rear will be approx. 300 yds on your right.
- From Rt 1 South, make a left onto Rising Sun and follow above directions.
